Environmental Group Petitions to Impose Stricter Controls on Chemicals Found in Water
One environmental group from the San Francisco Bay Area recently filed a proposal to impose stricter measures on chemicals and other pollutants that are presently being dumped in the area’s waters. According to their findings, these pollutants are affecting human hormone levels that cause infertility among other health problems. Furthermore, these chemicals are found to have had an effect in the area’s fauna, with numerous “frankenfish” hooked by anglers and a decrease in the number of wild frogs – a telling sign of a water system’s “health”.
The Center for Biological Diversity, which conducted an analysis on the Bay Area’s water quality, met with representatives from the United States Environmental Agency to discuss adding more regulations under the Clean Water Act after their analysis. These chemicals they say, make groundwater and drinking-water supplies unsafe. They also found a link with human reproductive health and the pollutants.
The group notes that for two decades, water treatment facilities around the US have been found to leak minute amounts of endocrine disruptors that seep into groundwater reservoirs. Over the years, these amounts have increased, affecting fishes, frogs, and other aquatic species. Most notably, dozens of fish caught from rivers and seas were found to have both male and female reproductive features, something conservation advocate Jeff Miller attributes to the chemicals in question.
Some of the chemicals and hormones found in groundwater are commonly found in birth control pills among other consumer products. Luckily for us who know better, using the BBT Natural Family Planning methods will not only spare us from the effects of these chemicals, but also to help improve what’s left of our clearly struggling environment.
